Meet Zoe Roarz
We're excited to introduce you to Zoe Roarz. In this interview, Zoe talks about her creative process, her diverse musical influences, and her approach to being an artist and performer.
Hi Zoe, we’re so excited to learn about your journey. To begin, can you give us a quick introduction?
I’m Zoe Roarz, a Poppunk Singer Songwriter Musician. “Trying to make as much noise as possible, can you hear me yet?” I’m originally from Kansas City, Missouri. I grew up playing in punk and metal bands and have always had a deep love for loud guitars and screams. I love singing and playing my guitar ‘til my fingers are sore and my voice is hoarse. Creating music gives me so much fulfillment. I play multiple different instruments like clarinet, piano, bass, and guitar. I hope to inspire others to express themselves creatively too.
Your punk and metal influence is evident. Who would you say are some of your musical influences?
Some of my biggest influences range from The Runaways, Babes in Toyland, Ottis Redding, Kali Uchis, Chris Cornell, Deftones, Amy Winehouse, Sunami, Ella Fitzgerald, SZA, Lady Gaga, Jimi Hendrix, Dystopia, Pink Floyd, Acid Bath, and Black Sabbath
That’s quite a range—I love the diversity! I’m curious, how does the creative process work when you’re making music?
When I’m making music it’s usually because I have an overwhelming feeling that I can’t voice anyway else. I usually isolate myself in my home studio and don’t emerge again until I have something I’m proud of.
Speaking of the creative process, what are some themes and topics you typically sing about?
I sing about human behavior and situations very personal to me. My music is the one place where I find it very easy to be honest. Most of the time in my real life I’m stuck people pleasing. It’s nice to have that safe and creative outlet to express.
Can you share what you like most and least about being a musician?
I love being able to vent in this secret third way of creativity and noise. I struggle a lot of the time to come up with the right words or how to say something. Sometimes there just aren’t words for what I want to say and music can say it better.
My least favorite thing about being a musician would have to be that I always have to constantly put myself out there and think of myself as a brand. It can be draining. Sometimes I just want to be a gremlin instead.
That’s relatable. And what do you feel sets you apart from other artists?
The feedback I get a lot is that people can see themselves in me. I get on stage and I sing my silly little songs about nothing. I’m dressed up goofy and I have stuffed animals all over the stage. Someone sees me do all that, and it gives them the confidence to walk a little weirder, dress a little weirder, be that one step closer to who they are on the inside and pull it out. In a world that is so serious and scary right now, I think people really like the escapism in my performances. I try to bring a wackiness and sincerity to whatever I do and I think people really appreciate it.
To wrap up, I’d love to give you the opportunity to share what you have going on. Are you working on anything that we can look forward to?
Yes! I am trying to release two more songs before the end of the year. The first is a track called “Dog Collar” which isn’t finished yet. It is about a badass chick who doesn’t take B.S. from anyone. The other is a track called “I’m Sorry I Cut up Your Shit” A self-reflective but cheeky song about breaking behavioral cycles and trying to be a better person. Stay tuned!!
Personally, we’re a huge fan of “I’m Sorry I Cut Up Your Shit.” 10/10 excited for these releases. Make sure to follow Zoe Roarz on the links below, and check out her music while you’re here!
