Hippo Campus at The Observatory
February 21, 2025
On a cool Southern California evening, indie rock darlings Hippo Campus took the stage at The Observatory in Santa Ana, delivering a performance that proved why they’ve become one of the most beloved bands in the alternative scene. Hailing from Saint Paul, Minnesota, the band comprises Jake Luppen (lead vocals, guitar), Nathan Stocker (lead guitar, vocals), Zach Sutton (bass guitar, keyboards, vocals), Whistler Allen (drums, vocals), and DeCarlo Jackson (trumpet, acoustic guitar, percussion). Hippo Campus is currently on tour in support of their latest album, Flood. Orange County fans were not disappointed.
Formed in 2013, Hippo Campus quickly gained traction with their high-energy performances and polished yet whimsical sound. They have been celebrated for their dynamic blend of indie rock, indie pop, and alternative rock, drawing inspiration from artists like Little Comets and King Krule. Their fourth studio album, Flood presents a more mature and introspective side of Hippo Campus while maintaining their signature charm. Recorded at Sonic Ranch in Texas, the band collaborated with producer Brad Cook to craft a record that balances sharp lyrics with a grown-up rock aesthetic.
The band's performance was marked by their tight musicianship and palpable chemistry. The setlist was a well-curated mix of nostalgic favorites like “Suicide Saturday” and “South,” alongside newer tracks such as “Kick in the Teeth” and “Honeysuckle.” My personal favorite of the night was “Way It Goes,” the song that first introduced me to the band and remains a favorite. Between danceable tracks and moody ballads, the band kept the audience fully engaged. Fans were also treated to a dynamic light show, with large lights positioned at the edges of the stage, casting striking beams that enhanced the visual experience and complemented the emotional ebb and flow of the setlist. The evening culminated in an encore performance of "Boys," leaving the crowd in high spirits and solidifying Hippo Campus's reputation as a compelling live act.
Hippo Campus continues to solidify their place in the indie music landscape with performances that feel both nostalgic and forward-thinking. With their blend of energy, musicianship, and lyricism, Hippo Campus proved once again why they are one of the most compelling acts in indie rock today.
